Lecrin Valley, Andalucia, Spain

Detailed below is a description of the villages that make up the Lecrin Valley including details of Bars and Resturants in each village. For direction to the resturants please refer to your house information book or email us.
The Lecrin Valley (the vale of Happiness) is situated midway between Granada and the costa tropical, in the foothills of the spectacular Sierra Neveda mountains which are snow capped for most of the year.
In my opinion it is one of the loveliest parts of spain, in a wonderful setting. It is unexpectedly tranquil with unspoilt views and many sleepy rural villages where you are more likely to bump into a mule rather than a car load of tourist. Taking about twenty minutes to drive from one side to the other it is easy to explore and visit the many bars and resturants on route.

Village of Saleres in the Lecrin Valley

The valley consists of a number of small whitewashed villages . A brief description of most is listed below.
Saleres.
Our house is situated in the village of Saleres, one of the smallest and less developed of the villages. It is as traditional as you will find anywhere in Andalucia, with the church being highlighted in the guide books. There are pleasant walks down the river and up onto the hillsides above the village.
The only village bar is in the main square, the door hidden behind an old stripped curtain. It is very basic but conquers up the real spain.
The village is surrounded by campo ( the spain agricultural area ) which is well irrigated giving the area a green lush feeling all year round with the scent of orange and lemon trees.
There is local bread van delivering to the village every day, listen out for the horn.
Durcal
A thriving market town, located on the eastern side of the Rio Durcal and at the foot of the Sierra de Durcal, with peaks of 3000metres.Durcal has thermal springs, a famous iron train bridge built by follwers of Eifel, as in Paris, and a spectacular summer fiesta. There are several large supermarkets in Durcal and a number of different shops and banks. It has many plazas with terrace bars and resturants. It is a friendly town.
El Padul
Around the same size as Durcal the town is mainly a light industrial  town. It has an attractive old town and a nice church, many different shops, bars and resturants. Granada is only 10minutes drive from here.
Niguelas
This village is in a spectacular setting at the foot of the sierra overlooking a dramatic gorge. It has an elegant plazas and a fine church. There is an olive oil museum here and a few shops and bars providing the basics of country living. Again it has excellent fiesta's throughout the year.
Chite
A very pleasant village with character, it lies in the heart of the valley. Full of quiant narrow winding streets, and cottages typical of the area. It is just above the 5km long Lake Largo de Benzar and surrounded by mountains and orange groves, with excellent views. There is a great antique shop here full of moorish item which is interesting to explore. It has its own Fiesta in the early summer.
Lecrin (Talara)
A small village with a few lively bars, discotheques and resturants. It also has three supermarkets, Banks, a Post Office, a Pharmacy, a Butchers, garages, bakeries and a carpenter and olive oil mill. There is a Bus stop to and from Granada and The Coast. There are also signs of Moorish influence.
Mondujar
This village adjoins lecrin. It has a large church and a moorish cemetary as well as some traditional houses and cottages. Above in the Sierra Mondujar are the remains of a moorish castle and further up a buddhist community.
Melegis
A lovely village in the heart of the fruit growing area. It has a few plazas and a couple of shops. In the spring the air is heavy with the scent of oranges and lemons.
Restabel
Great location on the western side of the lake. This small village is very traditional with white washed houses that have lots of character. There are  a few shops here and a couple of really nice resturants by the stream.
Murchas
Beautiful idyllic village that has a hilly location with a few shops and a couple of bars.
Pinos del Valle
A lovely village in two parts situated high on the west side of the lake with great views. Lots of pretty houses and cottages, plus a few bars and resturants. Great church and dramatic scenery.
Conchar
Delightful village close to Durcal at the foot of a dramatic gorge. It has a nice central plaza, church and a very nice resturant with outside terrace with views across the gorge.
Albunuelas
The closest village to Salares, it is another traditional whitewashed village full of character overlooking another spectacular gorge. There are a couple of supermarkets here and bars and resturants.
Acequias
On the opposite side of the barranco to Niguelas. It is a small but pretty village full of character and abundant water, springs and streams.

The Lecrin valley has been made an area of out standing natural beauty so development will now be tighter controlled to protect the character of the whole place.
The valley has many walks some take you past the beautiful lake Bezna, the only activity allowed on the lake is fishing. Carp are in an abundance and you will find bass also. Rumour has it that you even have Barbel in the lake but this appears to be false. You will need a Spanish fishing licence to fish and this can be arranged but needs to be done before you arrive. What you may see in the lake is the odd turtle swimming around as spotted by my son which I can confirm I also witnessed.

Drive over the pine forest mountain (not possible in the winter period) beyond Albunuelas and you will hit the main road from Almunecar to Granada. Turn left and head down towards Otivar and you will see some beautiful scenery.
In a different direction drive back to the Granada motorway and turn right and after a short distance turn off and head for Lanjaron. This town is famous for it’s bottled spring water which is sold world wide. Go beyond this town and you will enter the Alpujarras made famous by the former Genesis band member, he was the drummer on the first Album. Chris Stewart turned writer, wrote the book “Driving over Lemons” all about moving to the Alpajarras and living there. The last few years has seen this area become very popular with British people moving to Spain, Orgiva now accommodating many British families. A large number of tourist shops have now sprung up in the villages in that area so the coaches stop off in the villages to unload their holiday makers.

A short drive down the Granada to Motril road and you reach the coast of the Costa Tropical, this stretch of coast will have photography’s snapping away to capture the breath taking views. History surrounds this area with the castles at Salobrena, Almunecar and Neja. From the times of the Phoenicians, Romans who sailed these waters to the British Navy anchored off the Almunecar coast with the British navy ship HYACINTH firing a broadside at the Almunecar castle to send the French army retreating to Granada.
Now days the towns are more remembered for their charm and cosmopolitan atmosphere and area to relax. Music flows as musicians move from bar to bar to entertain and collect any tips. Coves with hidden beaches and for the naturalists a cove to be closer to nature with a lovely restaurant located just past Le Herradura.
Motril has grown in size with modern day holiday accommodation still being built and a golf course but the sea towns with more charm in our opinion and with in a reasonable driving distance are located west, Salobrena, Almunecar, La Herradura, Neja. Observe the sunset going down on this coast and the artist's amongst you will be rushing to get paint to canvass.

North of the Lecrin valley you have the Sierra Nevada a fantastic place to hike especially when the spring flowers are in bloom or in the winter to ski. One of Europe’s best kept secrets, it is the most southerly ski resort in Europe and is at a height of 3,350m and has the longest season from December to April.

The village of Guejar sierra can be found next to the Sierra Nevada as well as the city of Granada. One of the best ways to see Granada is to take the bus tour. You can spend easily spend a couple of days looking around the historical city of Granada. Look behind the main streets and see the abundance of Moroccan shops selling their goods and small bars with so much atmosphere. Granada is also home to Spain’s number one tourist attraction the Alhambra. Beyond Granada and only an hours drive you have Gaudix famous for the cave houses, cathedral and Moorish castle which dominates the skyline.
